Reflecting on my first post, I focussed on the three aspects of communication which I thought were some of the more important factors of effective communication. The three aspects were active listening, non-verbal cues and forging healthy relationships.
After all these weeks, my perception of what effective communication meant has changed somewhat a little. I used to think that effective communication involves making the right impression and getting myself into minimal conflicts as I dislike getting into disputes of any kind. Hence, I used to have the perception that the skills which would result in minimal conflicts are often the more essential ones in attaining effective communication.
However, these past few months has made me realise that effective communication also encompasses the ability to lead without being overbearing and to follow without being too submissive. Working with my group mates Desmond and Bryan has been a great experience=) Through the countless meetings we had, it became increasingly easier to convey our thoughts and ideas to each other and come to a consensus on many decisions. Even though the workload was rather taxing along with the pressing datelines, I had loads of fun and truely experienced the value of teamwork.
Furthermore, I believe that writing skills in the forms of project report, the minutes, the resume and job application letter, would be of tremendous help to me in the future.
All in all, it was definitely a semester well spent.

Hi Cass,
ReplyDeleteLike you, I totally agree that the module has equipped us with the necessary skills in professional communication in both written and oral forms.
I guess the heavy workload and the deadlines pushed us to our limits or even beyond our comfort zones. Yet the time flew past in a blink of an eye and all we can do now is to recall those many cherished moments just like flipping the pages of a imaginary script book.
A tap on the back for surviving this semester. All the best for the rest of your exams!
Regards,
Mario
Hi Cass,
ReplyDeleteThat was a nicely written final reflection which consisted of in depth thoughts of what you’ve learnt from the course. As pointed out in your post, I agree that this course has helped us realize that effective communication skills will not only prevent us from having interpersonal conflicts, but these skills are also essential in helping us resolve interpersonal conflicts.
Working in the same project team as you was a great experience. Through our multiple meetings, we were able to practice the various communication skills we gained in class. I would have to strongly agree that working in this team brought much joy and laughter amidst the tight schedule we constantly face. I believe that the good dynamics of our group have enabled us to communicate well with one another. Thanks for being such a wonderful team member!
To conclude, this has been a fulfilling module for me and I’m sure it was for you too. The written and verbal communication skills we’ve gained from this cause would definitely be beneficial to us in the near future.
All the best with the upcoming exams!
Cheers,
Bryan
Hi Cass,
ReplyDeleteYour final blog post left much room for reflection yet again, a display of the consistency in the effort put in throughout your work. Like you mentioned, listening plays an important part in communication. It struck me how much we take for granted that communication can only take place when there is a dialogue; if we want others to listen, we should reciprocate in the same manner as well.
With hindsight, the interaction with Bryan and yourself during our group meetings had allowed me to put into practice the myriad skills we were taught during the course of this module subconsciously. Like you have mentioned, active listening and learning to accommodate other people's opinions and not being overbearing has helped our group put together wonderful pieces of assignments. I was surprised at the rapport and lack of conflict our group possessed; to say i enjoyed myself thoroughly whilst working with the two of you will be an understatement.
Lastly, I hope that you will be able to apply the various aspects of communication and job application skills you found useful in the near future.
All the best in your future endeavours!
Cheers,
Desmond
